  • Who can apply for Hampi Art Lab’s residency?
    All applicants above 18 years of age can apply for the residency.
  • What is the duration of the residency programme?
    The residency programme at Hampi Art Labs typically lasts for 12 weeks per batch.
  • Is there an application fee?
    There is no application fee for the residency programme.
  • What is the application and selection process?
    Artists are required to fill out the application form on the website. A jury panel of esteemed art practitioners and leaders in the field of art, along with the Director and the Hampi Art Labs team shortlist applications. Applicants are then expected to present their portfolios and proposals to the Director and the team. The final selections are then made by the Founder and Creative Director. Once your application is finalized, we will send you an invitation letter and contract which you will be expected to sign and return in order to begin your residency. After completion of the formalities, we will begin the process of making your travel arrangements.
  • What are the selection criteria?
    Artists are selected basis of the merit of their portfolio, proposal and profile. The selections are made taking into consideration aspects including, but not limited to artistic abilities, conceptual depth, outcome, alignment with the vision of the residency programme, potential for growth and professionalism & commitment.
  • Who should I mention as a referee while applying for this residency?
    The referee in your application should be someone who has collaborated with you professionally or someone within the arts domain who is familiar with your work and can vouch for you and larger practice.
  • Would I still qualify for the residency programme if I am presently residing in India but hold citizenship in another country?
    Each open call specifies the requirements regarding national identities. Any open call for Indian nationals only accepts applicants who hold Indian citizenship.
  • Something came up—can I reschedule my residency?
    We understand that unavoidable circumstances may affect the availability of the chosen artist, however, we may not be able to reschedule your residency. We will review and discuss your circumstances on a case-by-case basis.
  • When can I expect to hear back about my application?
    We will review and notify you of the status of your application within one month after the Open Call application deadline. Due to the high number of submissions, we will be unable to provide individual feedback or update applicants whose submissions are not progressing to the next stage.
  • Where is Hampi Art Labs?
    Hampi Art Labs is located at the JSW Vidyanagar Township, 35 km (45-min drive) away from Hampi. The township is a lively community built around the JSW Steel Plant with amenities like grocery stores, medical care and services, pharmacies, ATMs, salons, hotels and various eateries.
  • How do I get to Hampi Art Labs?
    There are a number of ways to reach Hampi Art Labs and these are our recommended routes: 1. Via Hubli (Flight + Road) Flight to Hubli followed by a drive to Hampi Art Labs Airport Code: HBX (Hubli Airport) Distance from Hubli airport to Hampi Art Labs: 190 km approximately (3-hour drive) Most first-tier cities in India have airlines which fly to Hubli Airport* 2. Via Bangalore/Hyderabad (Flight) Flight to Bangalore/Hyderabad followed by a connecting flight to Vidyanagar Airport Code: VDN (Vidyanagar Airport) Distance from Vidyanagar airport to Hampi Art Labs: 4 km approximately (2 min drive) Alliance Air flies to Vidyanagar Airport from Bangalore and Hyderabad daily (except Wednesdays). Please note flights in this sector are often cancelled and subject to delays.* 3. Via Bangalore (Road) Drive to Hampi Art Labs from Bangalore Distance from Bangalore to Hampi Art Labs: 300 km approximately (6-8 hour drive) After acceptance into the programme, our team will manage your flight booking for your arrival and departure to Vidyanagar.   • What is the weather like in the region?
    The region experiences a tropical dry climate with hot summers, monsoons with moderate rains and mild winters.
  • What do I need to bring with art material or any other supplies with me?
    Incoming residents will need to bring art materials, tools or equipment specific to their creative practice and regular art supplies can be ordered online through Amazon. You can also choose to purchase and order art material from stores in Bangalore to be shipped to Hampi Art Labs. Once accepted, we will share a detailed list of amenities that are provided in your residential units, basis which you can make decisions about bringing any toiletries and personal supplies.
  • How do I receive mail and packages at Hampi Art Labs?
    The address for receiving delivery items at Hampi Art Labs is - Hampi Art Labs, opposite JSW, Vidyanagar Township, Gate, Toranagallu, Karnataka 583123
  • Is financial support provided by Hampi Art Labs to the residents?
    A weekly stipend of INR 15000 and a one-time production grant of INR 60000 are provided for the duration of the residency to enable the execution of an approved proposed project. Beyond the stipend, residents are responsible for their personal expenses, such as art materials and supplies. The residents must arrange health and travel insurance, and VISA (if applicable) for the duration of their stay.
  • What kind of accommodation is provided?
    Residents are provided with comfortable private accommodation on-campus with chargeable laundry facilities. The residential units are spacious and include a bedroom, a basic kitchenette and a washroom. Detailed information about the amenities will be provided once accepted into the programme.   • Are meals included in the residency?
    Residents are provided breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Ahara Café at Hampi Art Labs. The cafe also offers kitchen facilities to be used by the residents if required. Know more about the café here.
  • Is there Wi-Fi available at Hampi Art Labs?
    All studios, workshops and residential units are Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Can I have visitors stay with me at the residency?
    The residency units are single occupancy and all on-campus accommodation is strictly reserved for artists-in-residence only. Visitors can find accommodation at JSW Vidyanagar township. Visitors can visit Hampi Art Labs by scheduling a prior appointment during opening hours. Please contact info@hampiartlabs.com for more information.
  • What studio facilities are available?
    Residents have access to private or shared studios with ample natural light, ventilation, and basic interior furniture. There are five studios measuring approximately 800 sq. ft. each. Know more about the artist studios here.
  • What workshops and equipment do I have access to during my residency?
    As a resident of Hampi Art Labs, you will have access to the ceramics, printmaking and 3D printing workshops. The workshops include professional-grade equipment for the residents’ use under the supervision of the Workshop Manager. Know more about the workshops and equipment technical specs here.
  • How does the Mentorship Programme work?
    Our Mentorship Programme offers one-on-one and group sessions led by artists, curators, writers and creative practitioners, fostering community dialogue, and providing constructive feedback to residents, enriching their artistic journey.
  • What is expected out of the artists-in-residence?
    After completion of the residency, we request the artists to leave behind a work of their choice for the Hampi Art Labs archives. This work may be used for future exhibitions of the collection and/or archive and will be duly credited to the artists. The artists or their representative galleries are also expected to provide a price list for the artworks made at Hampi Art Labs for the Founders to make any purchases.
  • What kind of support is provided to residents after the programme?
    We offer support & opportunities through our alumni network, including opportunities for mentorship, exhibitions, and collaborations, and access to special online events and talks facilitated by Hampi Art Labs.
